Inventions and Innovation Program Awards $1.6 Million for Energy-Efficient Technologies
The U.S. Department of Energy's Inventions and Innovation Program (I&I) recently awarded 25 grants, comprised of 14 Category 1 and 11 Category 2 Proposals, for FY 1999 funding. The awards were chosen from more than 500 applications submitted in response to I&I's first competitive solicitation.
This new program, I&IP, replaces the previous Energy Related Inventions Program (ERIP). The purpose of I&IP is to support ideas within the areas of industry, utilities, transportation, or buildings that have a significant energy savings impact and future commercial market potential.
These innovative ideas are chosen for financial support through a competitive solicitation process. The new program provides financial assistance for establishing technical performance and conducting early develop-ment of innovative ideas and inventions. Funding of up to $40,000 is available for Category 1 grants and up to $100,000 for Category 2 grants. The level of assistance a proposal receives is dependent upon its stage of development. In addition to financial assistance, the program also offers technical guidance and commercial-ization support to successful applicants.
This year's 25 award winners were distributed by state as follows:
