NSF updates Science and Engineering State Indicators data tool

By: Conor Gowder

The National Science Foundation (NSF) National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) has recently updated 35 of its over 50 indicators covering education, R&D, and workforce, among other important topics. These indicators are available in two forms: the Science & Engineering Indicators and Science and Engineering State Profiles.

Each of the more than 50 indicators are available in the Indicator tool, where users can select any statistic to display on a state-level map broken down by quartiles, as well as in various charts and a downloadable data table.

The State Profiles tool is an interactive website that provides access to state-level data and rankings. The tool can display state data benchmarked to the national level and up to seven other states. Preset options to compare selected states with all neighboring states, states with similar populations, states with similar GDP, and states with similar amounts of bachelor’s degree holders are also available. Any state page can be customized and exported either as a PDF report or downloadable data file with the selected data.

With this update, NSF has also for the first time added county-level data to two of its newly added indicators—patents and trademarks awarded per 1,000 residents. To view data at the county level, visit the page of either indicator and press the toggle for “Display County Data” within the map or data table.
