Roadmap Lays Path for Future Robotics Research
Targeted investments in robotics research and development are critical to America’s competitiveness, according to a new roadmap authored by a group of more than 150 robotics experts across academia and the private sector. The plan, From Internet to Robotics: A Roadmap for US Robotics, presents potential research priorities for the field and discusses the workforce development, legal, ethical, and economic ramifications of automation technologies.
The roadmap is divided into sections, including: the transformation of manufacturing; next generation consumer and professional services; healthcare and well-being; ensuring public safety; and, exploring earth and beyond. Recommendations by the authors include increased funding for interdisciplinary robotics research; programs to make robotics employment more appealing; and, increased collaboration between professional societies, universities, and community colleges, to ensure that training keeps up with the rapid technological advancements.
