State Legislatures Passed Over 45,500 Bills from 2013-2014, 25% of Bills Introduced

In the recently released 50 State Project, CQ Roll Call provides an overview of the 45,564 bills and resolutions that were passed by state legislatures between the 2013 and 2014 legislative sessions. The report found the top issues covered by state legislatures during the timeframe were state budgets, education (including STEM and higher education), taxes, and transportation. Other important issues included job creation and energy-related issues.

Innovative Economic Development a Priority in PA, NC Budget Proposals

Several governors released their proposed budgets over the last two weeks, and while some states continue to deal with budget shortfalls that prevent many new initiatives from coming into fruition, governors in Pennsylvania and North Carolina included numerous proposals focused on innovation and economic development. Additionally, governors in Louisiana and Massachusetts highlighted new workforce development proposals.

This week, governors in Connecticut, Illinois, New Hampshire, and Texas revealed their budget proposals, with commonalities around STEM education, workforce development, and university research initiatives. Governors in two states, New Hampshire and Texas, made growth in the innovation economy a specific priority area of their proposed budgets.
